Jellyfin/Plex: add external storage?

Hi, all! Current build… About to install JellyFin to start serving my own media at home (think Plex) and can’t find any quick info on whether it’s possible. One quick post I found said NO, you can’t add storage for services. True? Can I add an external drive for my movies? Don’t care if it’s dedicated or if I can share with other services based on mounted volume.

Thanks!

Currently its not possible to add external drives and then assign them to specific services. Data is stored on one particular partition and that drive should be as large as you need.

If you server has a small drive, you’re able to swap it out with a larger one and preserve the data.

Another option you have is to set up a second server exclusively for media, a popular option with many people.

Hi, I have a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini with a 2 tb PCIe NVMe SSD currently thats close to max.

Does this mean I have to buy a 4tb ssd and transfer everything over to it? Or can I buy another 2 tb and add it to the system? Will the operating system recognize it?

If not, what would you recommend I do to add more? Thanks!

Unfortunately, like with most over operating systems, adding a 2TB drive to the computer will simply cause another 2TB of separate space to appear as usable on the system. And since in StartOS all the data is on one drive partition, there would be no way to assign this new space to services on that different separate partition. There’s also no way to merge the two drives and have the system act like there are one. Adding a separate 2TB, in StartOS, would simple cause a 2TB backup target to appear.

If you have available network storage and the technical chops, you can host Jellyfin content there, following this guide:
