Just moved - StartOS Launch error: Storage drive not found

I just moved and setup a new network. I can find the start9 on the netowkr and see that it says storage drive not found and StartOS disk not found.

The SSD drive seems fine. I kept it with me during the move along with the server and cables. It is powered on. Nothing I can see is loose. Its in the blue port.

Possible solutions:
Insert your startOS storage and click restart

tried and the same screen persists.

wondering if i should try repair drive?

Let’s clarify your message.

You say you are running your server with data on an external USB drive?

The recommended way to use a StartOS server is with an internal drive, the faster connection will make your experience a lot better.

External drives are only recommended for backups.

Trying repair drive will not hurt, but you can also try connecting the drive to another PC and see if everything is fine.

My start9 is a 2021 device. I dont think I have the option to do internal drive. When the upgrade to 3.0 i believe aroun 2022 or 2023 was happening i had to get an external ssd to upgrade versions.

You’re saying I can connect the SSD drive directly to my Mac and see if the data can be read so that we can rule out a corruption at the drive level?

Hi @Hadrian, plugging the SSD into the Mac is a good step, but it won’t fully confirm the data is fine. StartOS encrypts the drive (LUKS), so the Mac can’t mount or read the filesystem itself. What it can tell you:

  • Drive doesn’t show up at all in Disk Utility → enclosure/cable/port problem, not StartOS or corruption.
  • Drive shows up but as an unrecognized/foreign partition → that’s expected (it’s the encrypted volume) and actually good news, it means the drive and enclosure are electrically fine. Don’t try to initialize or format it.

If it shows up, the fault is more likely a connection issue back on the server side. Try a different USB port and cable on the server before anything else.

Hold off on “repair drive” until after this check.

The drive isn’t showing up in disk utility. I’m seeing if I can isolate the problem to the cable, the enclosure data adapter, or the drive itself.
