I’m backing up NextCloud on StartOS 0.4.0 beta 8. The NextCloud directory is around 100GB. The backup has been running for 24 hours and hasn’t finished.

This is a backup to a newly formatted EXT4 external SSD. Other services completed backups to the drive pretty quickly. NextCloud backed up fairly quickly on 0.3

Is this a known 0.4.0 issue or something else going on?

There’s often some confusion about how backups work. When you make a backup for the very first time, the entirety of contents of the various service volumes that require it are encrypted and copied. This takes a long time. Subsequent backups may take as little as a few seconds since they only copy the changes since the last backup. Presumably that’s what you’ve been doing with 0351. Unless you for some reason delete you entire previous backup before backing up each time?

Thanks. I’ve tried a few times now but the backups aren’t completing.

They run for a day or two and then fail with this error. I’ve tried turning off all services except nextcloud but still have the same issue.

Other services (Jellyfin, Vaultwarden etc) back up without issue

Still USB drive? Odd for the USB drive to simply stop responding and interrupt the process. We’re working on improvements to the process, but it’s also worth pointing out that you’re one beta behind. I think Beta9 included slight improvements.

I just wanted to follow up on this and say I’m having the same issue. I can’t get nextcloud to successfully complete a backup. I have about 2TB and I’m using an HDD so I know it would take about 10 hours if I was just copying the data over. My current backup has been running for 3D 23H which is fine for a first backup but the problem is it’s failed twice so far which means I had all that downtime for nothing. I’m not complaining, I love the work that everyone is doing here. Just wanted to point out the the problem still exists.

P.S. It’s just nextcloud for me too, everything else backs up fine but nextcloud is also by far most of data on my server.

I had very slow nextcloud sync after upgrading to 0.4. My solution was to open the nextcloud UI, grab about a dozen folders and upload them over wifi from my laptop. I’d check back in 30 min and do another bunch. Took a little bit of time, but once they were all uploaded, I’ve not had any new file sync issues.

In case anyone is interested. My nextcloud backup finally completed successfully after 11 days. Hopefully the next ones are faster 🙂

They will be faster, just the first is horrible.
