Hi,

I just started using StartOS for the first time, but have been following your company for many years now.
It is sadly quite laggy and I am not sure if its my specific hardware., because the specs should be OK. If I am in one of the services (e.g. Nextcloud) the slowness is gone, just the StartOS interface has the problem.

Laptop: T480, i5, 24GB RAM, 250GB storage.

Any ideas?

Hi! Please tell me about the client device you are using to access your StartOS server.

I’m not clear on your answer. Do you have two T480s, or are you running several VMs, and accessing one from the other?

What use case do you intend for your StartOS server?

Yes. I have two Thinkpads. One with the 64GB and the other with the 24GB.
I want to have a dedicated home server on one of them, so I installed StartOS on it.
I want to have some services on it, later use StartTunnel and sharing these services and accessing them on the go. For now just connecting to these services locally, like Nextcloud, small local AI for trying it out, etc.
I accessing the StartOS server from my main device, via a VM.

Take a look at the metrics tab, to view resource usage. But I suspect the lagy-ness you are describing is a client side issue. You may need to increase the resource availability to the client VM, if it’s unusable.

I checked the metrics. The CPU is less than 1%. The RAM is 30% but just recently because I added some local AI. The SSD is also barely touched.
I am not sure if its client side. If I open the services like Nextcloud, File Browser, Open WebUI, Kuma, etc. the lagginess stops. Its just on the StartOS Interface. Its all inside the same Browser. If I switch the tab to StartOS it gets slow.

It is. The StartOS UI runs in the browser. Since the resource usage on the server is low, we can rule it out as the cause of the lag. Now that’s not to say there can’t be optimizations, in the future, to decrease client side resource usage.

You can verify that’s it’s not the server by opening the StartOS admin dash on another device with more available resources.

Thanks for that info Rexter.
So I checked my Thinkpad which has StartOS on it and tried it via Kiosk mode and it was not laggy anymore. I also tried connecting to the server from a phone and it always worked well.
It seems, as you mentioned, that my Laptop struggles with it.
I tried several Browsers, so its the VM with Fedora 44 on it.
As you suggested, the client side resource usage optimization might help in the future. 🙂
