Using DDR3L Ram with Start9

Just wondering if anyone else is using/has used DDR3L ram while running StartOS?

My server consistently has time out issues and difficulty running multiple services. For instance, I will have 1 app running and then I start another app or interact with an app and it causes the one/s that were running to time out and be unresponsive.

I am curious if my RAM could be the reason (using Silicone Power 16GB SODIMM DDR3L 1600MHz) or maybe even my CPU (Intel i3-4005u @ 1.7GHz).

I am thinking maybe both of these may not be enough for Start9? Is low powered and low speed ram a problem with Start9 or could my CPU be a problem as well (considering the issue is timing out). Is the ram fine but CPU not?

Need a bit of guidance here. Thanks guys!

Those specs are more than enough to run StartOS (Start9 is not StartOS, one is a company the other is an operating system).

The question is, are those specs enough to run the services? (not apps, those are on your phone).

You don’t mention what services you’re running, so I can’t really answer the question fully, but timeouts on health checks are common when system resources are low. One of the most resource hungry services you can run on StartOS is Bitcoin, and I usually explain that people need two out of three key components to be good otherwise it won’t work (fast processor, fast SSD, 16GB+ RAM).

Okay so I changed a couple things and my system is running VERY smooth now. Documenting the changes here to maybe help others.

  • Removed one of the sticks of RAM - now I’m only using 8GB single stick
  • Turned off HyperThreading in BIOS
  • Turned on Intel Virtualization Technology in BIOS
  • Connected machine directly to Ethernet

These are the changes I’ve made and now the machine is running perfectly. Where before all services would time out if I started Electrs, now there are no time outs with 7 services running (before, running more than 1 in addition to Knots would give me time outs and couldn’t open app UIs).

I’m thinking I might try and put the other stick of RAM back in at some point to see if it is fine with 16GB - eliminate initial causes. I’m thinking it was probably enabled HyperThreading or disabled Virtualization that was giving me issues.
