Beethoven's 5th

Hello Start9 community. I have an embassy 1 delivered in March 2023. I haven’t even begun to explore all of it’s uses, but I was running a BTC node. A few months ago it lost connectivity. I have tried dozens of times to restart and it will no longer connect at all. I hear Beethoven’s 5th after power up, and after reading through this forum, it looks like I need to re flash my SD card. Does this sound correct? When I visit start.local, it has the attached error message. (upon attaching the screenshot, I don’t think it is uploading correctly for some reason). It basically says Docker error: mkdir, followed by several words and slashes. Thanks in advance for any help!

Give the system rebuild a try. This will rebuild the service containers, with out any effect to your data. Let me know how it goes.

Please keep in mind that if it works, start.local will no longer connect to anything. You’ll need to use your server’s adjective-noun.local address, or the IP address of your server.

Thanks so much! I’ll give it a try when I get a chance and report back.

Rexter, I flashed the SD card a couple of days ago following the instructions on Start9’s website. Everything indicated that it flashed properly. I stuck it back in my server and started it up and now it only makes the initial beeps but not Beethoven’s 5th. Only a red light on the front and I can’t access it via my personal .local or over tor. Just a blank white screen when I try to connect. Any ideas?

Did you try http://start.local from your client browser to see if diagnostic mode starts up?

Beethoven’s 5th - Something has gone wrong and Diagnostic Mode has been launched on http://start.local, please check here for solutions.

Yeah, I tried that. Before I flashed the SD card( Sorry if my terminology is a bit rough, I don’t actually know what I’m talking about:) start.local gave me the message in the above screenshot. Now it is just another blank screen, and I no longer hear beethoven’s 5th.

I would try another reflash, or it could be a hardware issue

I finally did a reflash of my sd card. Still getting a blank screen on my adjective-noun.local address. Also on start.local. Can’t connect over TOR either. The flashing process seems successful, except my computer wants to configure the disk to the drive, which I haven’t allowed. Any chance that has anything to do with it?

Hi there,

After reflashing, you will get new addresses. Are you using the updated ones? Also, try accessing your server using its IP address, which you can find in your router’s interface.

I can’t find what my new addresses would be. I just tried accessing the server via my router IP address and I still just get a blank white screen. I followed the instructions here Start9 | Common Issues and I seem to be doing everything correctly. I even get the “chime” sound after each restart, but only a solid red light, which if I recall used to be green when things were last working.

When you reflash the SD card, you are starting with a brand new StartOS so the old adjective-noun.local will no longer work.

On a reflash, you should try start.local to find your newly flashed server. You can also log on to your router to determine the local IP address of your server and then use your browser to connect to it via IP address.

Use the guide to walk through common issues with connecting on initial setup.

This loses me. Please tell us more about where you are seeing this. Is this something you are seeing on the server, or the machine you used to flash the SD card?

I’m seeing it on the machine I used to flash the SD card. It’s a Dell laptop with Windows 10 if that makes any difference. The message says something about configuring drive E, but balena etcher seems to find the sd card just fine and says flashing was a success when it is finished. When it is done the files folder on the laptop no longer shows a card to eject, so I just remove it and stick it in my start9 and turn the server on, but no luck with connecting via any of the routes suggested above.

Most of this is expected, and correct. The original .local, & .onion addresses are no longer valid. Let’s focus our efforts. Is the Dell machine the one that will be used to manage your server, at least for now? What browser do you use?

I mostly plan to manage my server from my phone, a galaxy 7 with graphene OS and vanadium as the browser. The Dell laptop has firefox currently as the browser if I use that.

Okay, just for the sake of simplicity let’s physically connect your Dell laptop, and the Embassy One, to the same router, or switch using Ethernet cables. Assuming of course that the dell has an Ethernet port… If so, open Firefox, and direct it to start.local, in the address bar at the top. If you get only a white screen, hard refresh the browser with the keys ctrt+shift+r.

I’ll definitely give that I try as soon as I get a chance. Thanks so much for helping me break this down and troubleshooting for me!
