I updated Bitcoin Core and discovered that I have Bitcoin Knots installed and running on the back, but doesn’t show on the services screen. It uodated automatically when I updated Bitcoin Core.
Why does this happen Is this safe? Should I uninstall it or let it run?
Install and update the version you want to run. If you want to run Core, install Core and update Core. If you want to run Knots, install Knots and update Knots.
The confusion is due to the fact that on StartOS both Core and Knots are “bitcoin” and so they appear to both be installed and updates for one may appear to be for the other. In your case, you had Core installed that had a version slightly lower than the latest version of Knots, which means StartOS believed there was an update for the one, the other or both.
This is the tradeoff currently to allow for Knots to exist on StartOS currently (which a lot of people want for both practical and political reasons), and is something that will be fixed in the future.
If you clicked to upgrade from Core to Knots, by clicking on Knots and then clicking upgrade, then you have made an active choice you switch to Knots. If this was somehow accidental, you’d go to the marketplace, go to Bitcoin and choose to reinstall Bitcoin. (Go to System and click on the heading Manage 5 times to enable that reinstall button if you don’t see it)
What actually happened was that a notification appeared for Bitcoin Core to be updated, and when I went into the updates screen, I saw that Bitcoin Knots was also displayed for update, as if I had it installed as well (which I don’t). I clicked on update for Bitcoin Core, and it started updating, but Bitcoin Knots also started updating, even though I didn’t click on it. I don’t understand why Knots appeared in the updates screen, as if I had it installed, when I have never installed it… and I don’t get either why it started updating when I click on Core update.
In the user interface they’ll appear as the same thing. StartOS thinks they are the same thing. When you click the update button on Core, you’ll see Knots appear to update, but it’s not really doing anything.
Whatever you have installed in Services is what you clicked on.
