Bitcoin Knots sync keeps timing out

I’ve got Start9 installed on a MacOS VM running UTM. Overall things have been working just fine, but Knots is having a lot of issues with initially syncing. It keeps timing out during the sync process and having to retry. I’ve been slowly climbing in the 80%-97% range for a good two weeks or so. I’ve tried restarting Bitcoin Knots as well as the server itself several times, but no luck. Any idea why Start9 might keep timing out during the initial sync process?

You might try giving the VM more resources. Not enough CPUs or Ram could bottleneck it. But it should work in theory. I haven’t tried Knots yet but have synced Core several times with UTM. I think Knots might be a little more resource intensive than Core

What concrete actions are “to give the VM more resources” considering Knots? How to configure its?
Those who know, please advise!

Hi there,

Rick meant that when you create a VM, you should assign more CPU and RAM to it because syncing Bitcoin requires a lot of resources. When Bitcoin times out, it usually means the VM isn’t keeping up with the syncing process.

I’m a complete Start9 newbie so maybe I’m in the wrong thread. Anyway I understand there is a problem with the future of Core and that Knots is the way to go. oes Start9 recommend I go with Core first as it’s on the Marketplace?

Not really the thread for this, but you can find Knots in the community registry .
@StuPleb wrote up a nice guide here for switching if you’re interested

The fact that one is in the “official” registry, and the other is in the community registry is not meant to imply that one is recommended over the other. It’s only that way right now, because of the circumstance Stuart talks about in the post linked. This will be resolved with StartOS 0.4.0. We at Start9 are committed to providing end user choice. It’s your server, and you run whatever you want. Our endorsement, or approval is not needed.

There’s some more useful information in the official announcement on Nostr:

Thanks for the help. I’m now running Knots. I feel like I’ve achieved something. Just one thing. Why does the Start9 make whining noises every now and then?

The internal fan in thermally controlled. Under times of high load you are likely to hear the fan ramp up. This does not indicate a problem. Making sure that the server is in a cool, well ventilated area will help with this as well. Some people prefer to not have their server in a common living space, as it’s not expected to be silent.
