Bypass .local (mDNS)

Hi, is it possible to bypass / disable .local address for services, I find that it’s annoying and a pain in the ass ? Is it possible to use the IP address of the server instead to access services ? My problem with it is that my start9 server is behind a different NAT than the computer that I use to connect to the startOS web interface and so .local address are not working. I can successfully manage to connect to the UI (with a VPN to the server subnet) using the IP address that my router gave to the start9 server, however for the services I can’t, I would I guess need the ports used by the services, is there a way to get those ?

Thanks.

There will be, come v0.3.6 of StartOS. When we made the decision to implement .locals with mDNS for all services quite some time ago now it was under the assumption that it would become more popular, that more devices would support it, that it would make home networking easier for everyone, and it would allow people to seamlessly switch from LAN to TOR interfaces by just changing the .onion/.locals in the services address.

It hasn’t quite worked out as we planned. People are doing home networking less and less, not many devices come with support for mDNS as they only expect to ever need to connect to the internet and third party servers.

Abstracting IP addresses and ports so the average user didn’t have to see them wasn’t the best approach, we’ve found, so v0.3.6 will remedy that.

Until 0.3.6, if you’re connecting from a subnet different from the one the server is on, that would be considered a remote connection. The currently supported method for doing so, is Tor.

Yes this is what I end up doing, but I would rather not go through the internet when I’m at home

OK thanks, until v0.3.6 is there a way to get the used ports of the services ?

No, there isn’t a method to expose the ports of the services directly.
