Anyone know if I can connect a start9 node to an existing btc full node or does a start9 node need its own blockchain copy?

Hi, although this is technically possible, there is no GUI option for it.
This would mean that you would have to give it a try yourself, but please be warned that this is not supported.
You would probably need to build custom service wrappers that change the configs to point to an external server for bitcoin core instead of the local one at bitcoind.embassy.
Or alternatively, you could try to modify the /etc/hosts file in each container and make bitcoind.embassy point to his bitcoin server.
Changes inside the containers don’t survive service restarts though so you’d either have to edit it every time after you start a service, or modify the service package wrappers.
