Constantly running fan

i’m running start9 on a late 2014 15" MBP. the fan runs constantly - 24/7. is this cause for concern, and is there anything i can/should do about it?

Are you saying it’s running full bore, or are you concerned that it’s running at all?

the fan is running full bore non stop. just wondering if this is sustainable long term

also, i noticed recently my start9 was down (not sure how long it had been). so i powered down and powered back up and it seems to be running ok. not sure if this is normal to occur occasionally, or if it’s somehow related to the constantly running fan perhaps indicated the hardware is overstressed?

I was hoping that another user with a similar DIY setup would chime in, as thee are a few things here I don’t know. If the fan is simply running full bore, from the moment it boots, it may be that StartOS doesn’t contain the drivers to properly communicate with the fan controller, so it just runs full bore. I’m pretty sure that I’ve heard of that with other Linux Distros running on a Mac, in the past. Really, the only concern with this, is the noise level. Now the other possibility could be, that your system is not cooling properly, and this is why the fan is so cranked up, based on the thermal event. The vents might be covered, or plugged up with dust. Or the heat sync may need to be removed, cleaned up, and re-seated with an appropriate amount of thermal paste. An over-heating processor, would explain the system suddenly not responding.
