DIY Install Start9OS on new PC

Let me point out that we are trying to hack StartOS onto a machine that’s not supported by StartOS, because it requires some specific driver that’s missing in the current version of StartOS. Even if this gets past one problem, you might encounter other problems. Future versions of StartOS may not have this problem. But if you still want to try, we need to reduce the number of variables here. In the BIOS set the boot options to boot the flash drive without any key strokes. Make sure that part works - that it boots from the flash drive without any key strokes even though it results in an error. Once that’s verified, turn the Nuc off. Verify that the Nuc is connected via Ethernet to your router, and the machine that you’re going to connect to it from is also connected to the same router, via ethernet. Disable the wireless just to eliminate the variable. If it’s on a different subnet, this will not work. Disconnect the monitor, but leave the keyboard and mouse connected for now. Turn on the Nuc. Give it five minutes just for good measure. Then open a browser that’s on the other machine connected to the same router or switch. Type start.local, and press enter on the keyboard.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate any feedback

I did some playing around with this, i tried to look for settings on the Asus bios that may disable peripherals and then enabled/disabled some settings.

I can’t seem to access Start.local on another PC during all the tests and all attempts that i could at least view the screen ended with terminated error 1 message after start 9os loads, takes about 10 seconds of checks and then fails.

Setup

Nuc 14 connected via ethernet
Hp laptop connected via ethernet

same network but cannot access start.local

Test 1:
Monitor and keyboard connected

  • boots Start9os without keystrokes (entering bios). I didn’t need to change any settings just launch bios once then F10 to save and it launches from there after restart. fails at error 1 message

Test 2:
Monitor, no keyboard

  • launches start9os fail error 1 message

Test 3
-No monitor or keyboard, no access to start.local so i assume failed

Test 4
-Monitor and keyboard connected, with secure boot disabled- fail

Test 5
-No monitor or keyboard, secure boot disabled- fail

Test 6
-Secure boot disabled, fast boot enabled - fail

Test 7
-Same as test 6 without keyboard and monitor - fail

What i have noticed if this is supposed to be or not but the Nuc doesn’t show up as a wired client in my router settings, if this is because there are no drivers loaded yet.

I no others have stated using a USB to ethernet and plugging Ethernet into usb but i am unsure on this

I posted some images from the bios boot menu.

Let me know if i need to clarify, any help is appreciated otherwise i will

keep experimenting,

I’d add more images but i can only add one

Thanks

At this point, with everything you’ve tried, I think it’s pretty safe to say that the current version of StartOS is not compatible with that machine. If you insist on using that hardware, the way to go would be to install Proxmox, and run StartOS as a VM.

hmm thanks for your reply.

I’m going to keep digging on the forums for a bit, otherwise i might have to go that route.

I have now got start 9 running.

Successful install after some configuration

Nuc 14 essential barebones
N150
Crucial DDR5 16gb
Samsung Evo 990 2tb

-Nonfree version
-HDMI and monitor disconnected
Ethernet to usb converter was needed. I believe to bypass Realtek ethernet drivers, i used TP-link UE306
-Secure boot i beleive was disabled
-Bypass driver option ticked

Added to known hardware list

thankyou all who contributed to this post.

Awesome! Let me get a little clarification please.

What happens without the USB to Ethernet adapter?

What is the “Bypass driver option” It that something in the BIOS?

Please look in the BIOS, and verify that secure boot is disabled still.

Without the adapter i got the server terminated with error 1 message.

Plugging in the adapter seems to bypass the need for the realtek ethernet driver which must have been causing the error.

I used these steps

  1. Nonfree version
  2. Secure boot disabled
  3. No keyboard/Monitor
  4. Usb to Ethernet adapter
