Dns_probe_possible

I am getting the DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE when I ‘Launch UI’ on all apps that I have downloaded. I have verified that Bonjour64 is running by checking services.msc.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Problems with the trusting the Root CA steps can be a bit tricky to debug from afar because there are no many variations and things that can be missed.

Were you able to complete all the steps in the guides? Did anything occur differently form the order? What browser are you using? Anything special about it? Did you uninstall Bonjour and install it again (this does often work)

Yes I’ve gone back over the steps to make sure that I’m trusting my root CA and I have reinstalled bonjour64 many times. I am using Brave browser, I don’t think there is anything special about it.

I have the same issue, I am on a mac. Followed instructions and everything is synced and working just fine, just not local UI for any of the services.

When you can’t find local UIs it means you don’t have mDNS capability. If you’re on Windows, it means you didn’t follow the guides and skipped the part about Bonjour. If you’re on Linux, it means you’re distro doesn’t run Avahi and you need to install it or you didn’t follow the guides where it mentions issues with containerized apps.

Which OS are you using?

I am on macOS Big Sur and really tried to follow along on troubleshooting here and also from what I learned from Grok but without luck so far.

There’s no real way that you can’t open a service .local URL while also being able to open your unique StartOS adjective-noun.local on a Mac. You either have access to your server and your local network… or you don’t.

Are you actually connected to your server? Are your services running? Can you access the .onion? Are you running a browser, or a plugin in the browser, or other software than can block access? When you access your StartOS UI, is that with https ?

I access my Start9 OS by entering the IP address. The name.local does not work
I can also reach it using the TOR address

So just to clarify I am not able to access it by use of the “StartOS adjective-noun.local”

This step 5 in troubleshooting says that If you are using macOS, confirm your browser is allowed to access local network devices at: Settings –> Privacy & Security –> Local Network.

I don’t get that option shown, perhaps because it is macOS Big Sur and they did this another way at one point. I can’t seem to find that setting.

You’re on version 11 of macOS, whereas the local network access was added in 14 or 15, so you don’t need to do that.

I’m not aware of anything on v11 that would stop avahi/mDNS from working. It should work by default.

Outside of macOS itself, some people run third party applications like security software or VPNs that block access.

I just setup also on a Window machine. Everything green and the certificate etc. imported successfully. Then tried to access the server by using the “StartOS adjective-noun.local” which worked. But trying to access the services running, like eg. mempool locally it dit not work. I also made sure to install Bonjour as described in the instruction for Windows.

Starting to think that it may have something to do with my router or ISP? Could that be and if so what would you suggest I check for?

It would not be the first time I’ve seen a router interfere. Two wants I can think of that would cause it and you can look for on the router are UDP Port 5353 being blocked or anything related to Multicast Traffic

The only other edge case I know of is multiple NAT setups, where you have a router plugged into a router, each creating its own network, with hampered communication between them.

I actually have another router connected to my main router but that one is not part of this setup other than being connected to the main router, both computers and Start9 is connected to main router.

Also should say that the second router is placed 25 meters away and has its own WiFi, SSID etc.

Hi Jake21m

Sometimes, in my experience, macOS needs a reboot to get mDNS working properly. Maybe this will help.

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried a few times and no luck yet. From what I understand from troubleshooting with help from Grok, I need to call my ISP as I have a router provided by them that may have some settings that can only be change by them (according to Grok)

You’d probably be better off doing the opposite of calling your ISP… by getting a new router from ANYWHERE but your ISP so they can’t apply arbitrary restrictions on you in your own home.

Yes, that was also the conclusion I finally came to  Hope that will solve it and thanks so far. Will let you know.
