Errors upgrading from 0.3.5.1 to 0.4.0 beta 9

I had 0.3.5.1 running but the upgrade to 0.4.0-beta-9 is failing after starting the upgrade. Old OS won’t start now, so I guess I need to press forward getting 0.4.0 installed.

First error was “Disk Management Error: mkfs.vfat: I/O error (os error 5)” in the red background Error popup. This happened repeatedly at first.

A week later now, I am again trying to install 0.4.0 again and the error is different. I pick the 500GB os drive and 4TB data drive (nvme) and press Continue

I tried the install w/o network and w/ network plugged in and both produce this error

Reloading the page just restarts the install wizard.

How can I get some logs or other info to diagnose the issue?

Thanks!

The screenshot you show is not a StartOS migration error, it’s a browser error, where something between your browser and server is being intercepted and blocked. The solution is fully within your reach, but I don’t know where to tell you to look other than the suggestions in the message itself. Remember you don’t need privacy tools enabled to use your server securely – you don’t need to secure yourself from yourself. Your server is a trusted device.

Thanks for the reply… but this is an error from the Start9 installation wizard. That wizard presents a browser window, so there is a browser. No obvious server, though, since I am installing that server in the browser provided by the boot ISO.

I heard a rumor that my problem may be due to using Ventoy instead of a flashed USB. If so, I hope that is something Start9 could fix.

I will update once I know the outcome of etching a fresh USB

You can use a monitor, but it’s expected you use https://start.local since I have no way to debug your HDMI cable or monitor, only that to tell you they’d definitely work if they were working with 0351 in kiosk mode. If you’re introducing new variables, that’s not wise when doing something new.

You now mention Ventoy. You’re more than welcome to do whatever you want, however you want, but it also means we’re unable to support you. Not because we don’t want to, but because we can only test and confirm so many routes.

I appreciate the assistance, but I am not sure how this discussion got so far from the OP. The original problem I reported was an error during the install process from the boot ISO to my PC – not a kiosk, not talking to a server.

In any case, the OP was encountered after selecting target disks for the OS and Data. I was booting the Start9 iso using a usb disk and Ventoy (a boot manager for USB drivers - awesome tool overall).

The install worked after I switched to boot from a directly flashed USB. Same iso, same UI sequence, same disk selection, but no error and the install succeeded.

I wanted to post this to clear up what the OP was and that ventoy was (somehow) the trigger. I’ve installed many OS’s using Ventoy (mint, pop-os, ubuntu, windows 10, …). I would love it if this were fixed, but I’ve worked around it for now.

So far, I am loving the new OS. So much win!

To the Start9 team: any estimate on when an upgrade to 0.4.0 will be available in the Marketplace? Are we looking at weeks, months, another year? Thank you for your help!

StartOS v040 has been available for a few months now. The only reason you wouldn’t upgrade today is if you don’t have a USB thumb drive to spare and can’t get one.

There is a misconception that the upgrade guide is “too much hard work” and that you can avoid this work if you just wait. Unfortunately, migrating from one OS to an entirely different one is a VERY big deal, and you’d be fully expected to complete that guide in every way regardless of how you trigger your upgrade path – not doing so risks all your data.
