Help! Start9 OS 0.40 Loading issue

I followed the instructions for the upgrade to 0.040 and it just keeps saying Loading, see the attached image. Any idea what I should do next? I just run a node on my Start9 server so I don't have files per se. I tried to run over TOR along with my local, the local won't even load I am using http://start.local , and the TOR is just 'Loading’ as per the attached.

Hi @Napa, thank you for reaching out. This matches a known 0.4.0 issue.

Tor login issue: There’s a known bug in 0.4.0 that breaks Tor login entirely - it hangs/errors with a signature auth mismatch. You need to log in locally first, then update to 0.4.0~1 when available (that fixes it for Tor).

Local access not loading via http://start.local: Two likely issues:

1. On 0.4.0, StartOS uses HTTPS now, not plain HTTP. Try https://start.local instead - plain http:// may just hang/fail.

2. If that still doesn’t work, run through basic LAN checks: same network (not guest WiFi), not on a VPN (or VPN allows LAN traffic), not using Tor Browser.

Try this order: 1. Go to https://start.local (not http) on a device on the same LAN.

2. If it loads but shows a cert warning, that’s expected until you trust your server’s Root CA - you can proceed past the warning.

3. If it still won’t load, check the basic connectivity steps: same LAN, no guest network, no VPN blocking LAN, not Tor Browser.

Since you’re currently locked out both locally and over Tor, getting local HTTPS access working is your priority - that’s the only way to complete/verify the 0.4.0 update right now given the Tor bug.

If https://start.local still fails, let me know what error you get and I can dig further, and consider connecting a monitor/keyboard directly (Kiosk Mode) or via SSH as a fallback.

Hi Jeremy, thank you for your response!

So I tried to local connection without VPN for both https://start.local and http://start.local and both seem to just be hanging and not connecting properly. Do I need to do a hard reset of everything? I don’t mind starting from scratch etc. since I only run a node on my Start9 and don’t have any files etc. for now. Thanks again for your help with this.

Hi @Napa, thanks for your follow-up note. A hard reset isn’t necessarily needed yet, this could just be a stuck migration or a stale/cached page.

A couple important notes based on your situation:

1. Migration can genuinely take hours. Expect progress to sit at 85% for a long time - potentially hours. It is not stuck. If your “Loading” screen is actually the migration progress screen (not just a browser hang), just leave it running.

2. start.local is only for the installer/migration screen, not your final address. Once your server has rebooted, go to your server’s own address (adjective-noun.local) - the address you used on 0.3.5.1, not start.local.

3. If you do get a page but it looks wrong/blank/old, that’s a caching issue, not a broken server: if you get the old 0.3.5.1 interface, a blank page, or a “cannot connect” error, your browser is serving you its cached copy of the old UI. The server is fine; the page is stale. Try an incognito window or hard refresh.

4. Basic local connectivity checklist (since you said local isn’t loading at all): Confirm your phone/computer is connected to the same network as the server, not a “Guest” network, not using Tor Browser, and not using a VPN (or that it allows LAN connections). Since it sounds like your update may genuinely be stuck (not just cache), and you’re OK starting fresh: the cleanest path is a flash reinstall with Preserve (keeps data) - but since you only run a node and don’t care about data, you could also do a fresh flash install instead. That avoids waiting on a potentially-stuck OTA update entirely.

If you want me to walk you through flashing 0.4.0 fresh via USB, I can definitely do that too. That’s usually faster and more reliable than troubleshooting a stuck OTA update.

Hi Jeremy,

Firstly thank you for your detailed responses. So after 48 hours it finally connected and updated via Tor. I must admit I love the new UI and I will dig into this version in the coming days. Problem solved. Thanks again!

Perfect. Glad to hear it!
