Hi all, when it comes to a home security camera system. Are there any brands or types of systems that wouldn’t be able to integrate into a Start9 server? I barely know what I’m talking about here, so apologies if I’m off. Like any of the systems purchased from Costco or Deviant Ollam’s (Security Educator / Youtuber) mentioned Wyze camera systems. Can any of these be integrated into a Start9 server? Again, maybe I’m totally off here. But was just curious. Thanks all-
Both home security and home automation (I imagine the two would go hand in hand) have been topics that have been discussed by users of StartOS a number of times. Whether its something Start9 would ever be involved in or whether someone else would release open source software to interact with (presumably) open source hardware remains to be seen. Start9’s focus is on building a base that others can build on, and this is typically with open source and verifiable software – so it would need to be something where someone in Beijing is not able to casually observe you 24hrs per day as in the case now (or someone in Langley, now that western produced doorbells are popular).
Thanks for the thoughts Stu. SO no one has done this yet. Before I asked about this I did my best to search the forum for this topic. I must have missed it. What key words should I search for? Or can you link any of the threads specifically? Thanks
Actually someone did do this… About 2 years ago. Someone took ZoneMinder - which is an OpenSource video surveillance software system and packaged it for StartOS. It was in pre-alpha and he helped me sideload it onto my StartOS server. I tried it, but had issues with getting a compatible camera and then making it all work so I could view the camera when not at home. I loved the idea, but was definitely too early.
Once 0.3.6 is officially released and I can access StartOS from my phone via clearnet (not TOR) this is one of the key services I will need to try again.
I’ll reach out to the packager later today and see if he’d be willing to update his packaging to get the latest version of ZoneMinder and update the packaging to 0.3.6.
If we get ZoneMinder working on StartOS - maybe those of us using it can post what cameras we got to work with it and the settings or other tweaks needed to make them work.
Last week I tried out Home Assistant. It has Vaultwarden (Bitwarden) on it’s server software store also. So now I am running 2 servers in my home. My Start9 server doesn’t have as much issues as my home-assistant.io server. It is nice to see a password manager on both stores.
