When I boot my mini PC (it’s a HP Elitedesk 800 G4), the language selection screen and initial setup options appear normally, but when it asks me to choose where to install the operating system and where to store the data, only the external SSD and the USB flash drive I’m using for the installation show up. There should show the internal NVMe storage also
It’s only really half the responsibility of StartOS to detect the NVMe, I’ll also need to be detected by the firmware. If you can boot into BIOS (hitting ESC I think on this device) you should be able to browse around and make sure it’s detected physically or if some setting needs to be changed to allow it to be.
As for the StartOS side, many people simply wipe their drives, create zero partitions and therefore no partitions show up. It’s suggest creating something, anything on this drive, such as at least a large Ext4 partition, so you can more easily expect an OS to know it’s there.
I went to the BIOS to do what Claude told me to check but I didnt find much info. That minipc comes with Windows 11 preinstalled so its not fully empty. Im going to check again on the BIOS what you say. Thanks ![]()
It’s possible that StartOS simply does not contain the necessary drivers for that machine. What I would try next, is to try booting into Debian, and see if it detects the drive. If it does not, then you’ll be a bit out of luck, as proprietary drivers are required. If Debian does see the drive, use Gparted to create a new GPT partition table, and then a single EXT4 partition. In the bios make sure UEFI boot is enabled, but secure boot is disabled.
Then try to install StartOS again.
Okay, I’m probably the biggest clown in the world. I flashed Kali Linux in live mode onto a USB drive to find an internal SSD drive, and it didn’t show anything. I tried to open the mini PC and found that the internal SSD drive was DISCONNECTED. I just needed to PUSH the SSD drive with my finger to connect it to the motherboard, then close it again, flash it with StartOS, and then finally the internal SSD drive was there.
Obviously, it was the fault of the company I bought the computer from, lol.
Anyway, thank you guys.
Sometimes this happens during shipping. We’ve had it happen to some of our units.
