Moving server to new h/w

I have a StartOS server running on an old HP laptop. It’s been good, but I decided it’s time for a hardware upgrade. Since, as I understand it’s linux based, I figured I might be able to simply move the SSD from the old machine to the new one, and it though it might “just work.” Well, it does boot, but it plays the error tone and goes into diag mode, saying it can’t find the wifi adapter. Now, I didn’t ever use wifi, but the old machine had built in wifi, as it’s a laptop. The new machine is a Dell Optiplex 7010 desktop. I don’t need or want wifi. Is there an easy way to disable the wifi requirement, from the diag screen, or would it be easier to just reflash the server, with the use existing drive option?

Generally yes, you can move the disk and have everything just work, linux being linux. The one time when this will not be true is when network interfaces are vastly different, such as in your case, and StartOS is looking for what was once there and now isn’t.

The fix is easy, just flash StartOS non-free to a USB thumb drive, boot from that, then reinstall StartOS choosing to preserve all data.
