Network drive filesystem error

I am trying to configure an ext4-formatted powered usb hard drive that is connected to my ubuntu 24.04 desktop as a network drive for backing up my raspberry pi 4 startOS server, but I am getting the following error:

-RPC ERROR: Filesystem I/O Error mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)

I’ll hugely appreciate any ideas anyone has.

Follow these instructions carefully, and meticulously. Let us know if you get stuck on any specific step, or if something doesn’t look right.

Thanks Mike,

I followed the instructions again after a computer restart, and got it connected. I am almost certain I followed those instructions correctly the first time, so maybe the restart sorted it out.

I’m noticing now that the backup to the network folder is very slow - it’s been running for over 24 hours now, and has only gotten through 3 of my 7 services (including File Browser, which has ~250 GB of storage, and Jellyfin and Ghost, neither of which consume much storage). Is it normal for it to take so long?

Thanks!

It can be. Depending on network speed, and other factors. Keep in mind the future backup will only backup the changes since the previous backup. So future backups will be much faster than he initial backup.
