Network Time Protocol problems

Hello. I began having problems logging in to server across Tor on one client but not the other. After multiple restarts of the clients, I eventually tried shutting down the server to try a reboot. Couldn’t log back in at all. Started a reboot in kiosk mode. Server banner at startup indicated there was a problem with NTP. Online NTP checker confirms this. I’m a bit out my depth. Any help much appreciated. Thank you

Off hand, I can’t come up with a logical hypotheses as to the connection between issues. But let’s focus on the NTP problem first. This error message usually indicated that your server is having trouble connecting to the Internet. The inability to connect over Tor may be down stream of that.

Let’s knock out the basics. Unplug the power to your network equipment. (modem, router, etc) Then from kiosk mode on the server, stop all services, and restart the server. System>restart. While the server is restarting, connect the power to your network equipment, and make sure it/they are on. Wait 5 minutes or so, until your client machines are back online. Then log in to your server and see if the NTP error is still present.

Thank you. I gave up before you replied. The server wasn’t booting up at all unless I restored it from the USB, it was hanging on a black screen. So I did a new install.

Before it all messed up it was repeating this error message in tor logs:

Closed 1 streams for service [scrubbed].onion for reason resolve failed. Fetch status: No more HSDir available to query.

It is still repeating this error in the new install. And like before it is not connecting to Tor browser, it hangs on white screen after the warnings. Tor is working for other sites. Server is connecting to my onion address over Firefox however. Could this be ISP censoring? Thanks again

I mean… if you live in a country where the government “incentivizes” ISPs to block Tor. But it’s much more likely that a tor reset will get you working again. You can find that under System>Experimental>Reset Tor. Go ahead and check “wipe state” for good measure, and then click reset. Hopefully this solves it, but that wouldn’t explain the NTP error you had before.

Fair enough then! Vote with your dollars. I’d also consider leaving them an honest review on a prominent review site.

My bad, you’re right it’s not the ISP. I can still connect to tor with one client but not the other.

Ah, so it’s a client side issue. Please tell me about the client that cannot connect. What kind of a device is it, and what OS? Is it connected to your network via ethernet?

It’s a pc with ubuntu. It is connected via ethernet.

Open a terminal, then:

ping adjective-noun.local

Please replace adjective-noun with your server’s name.

Do you get replies, or a cannot be found message?

It is found. Connected on LAN.

Okay, so you’re only having trouble with .onion address?

Please install if needed, and attempt to connect to your server using Tor browser.

I did a re-install of tor earlier. Not connecting to server, hanging on blank screen after the warnings.

There is a distinction between tor, and tor browser. I’m asking about tor browser specifically. Are you attempting to connect with tor browser?

Yes, I’m attempting to connect with tor browser.

On the blank screen. Press ctrl+shift+r. Wait a full 5 minutes. Is it still blank?

Is this Ubuntu machine a laptop, that you will need connect to your server when you are out?

I did reset, it is still blank.

It is a desktop pc and yes.

The blank white screen, means the browser has connected to the server, but a script or something is being blocked preventing the page from loading. You may need to loosen the browser’s security settings. Or there is some sort of firewall, or other security feature blocking it somewhere.

What version of Ubuntu are you on? I’ll throw an install on a machine, and test with you.
