New Server Unreachable After 1 Day — Stuck on "State Unknown"

Device: Server One
StartOS Version: 0.4.0.1
Connection: Wired Ethernet
Age: Purchased brand new, issue started within 1 day of first setup

Summary

Brand new server, less than 24 hours old, is currently completely unreachable and shows “State Unknown” for all services. This started as a repeating “Server Connected” toast with Metrics never loading, and has progressively gotten worse.

Timeline

  1. Initial setup completed successfully, server accessible via LAN over wired Ethernet.
  2. Started initial Bitcoin Core sync (IBD).
  3. Within hours, the dashboard began showing a repeating “Server Connected” toast notification that would reappear immediately after dismissing it. System Metrics (CPU/RAM/disk/temp) never populated — stayed blank/empty.
  4. Performed a proper power cycle (not a hard pull) — this temporarily restored normal connection.
  5. Approximately 1 hour later, the same “Server Connected” loop and missing Metrics returned.
  6. After another restart attempt, the dashboard now shows “State Unknown” for the server and all services, with no successful reconnection since.

Hardware notes

  • Brand new hardware, ruling out power supply degradation or wear.
  • Wired connection throughout (not Wi-Fi).
  • Issue occurs during Bitcoin Core’s initial blockchain sync, so system load is high, but I have not yet been able to confirm whether load is the root cause since I lost UI access before I could test stopping Bitcoin Core.

What I’ve tried

  • Power cycled the server via proper shutdown (not unplugging).
  • Tried a different browser and device to rule out a client-side issue.
  • Attempted to reach support.start9.me for direct support but could not get the Matrix/Element login screen to load.

Current state

Server shows “State Unknown” and is not reachable via .local address. Have not yet tried connecting a monitor/keyboard directly or confirmed SSH access, but plan to next.

Question

Given this is happening on brand-new hardware within the first day, I want to rule out a defective unit vs. a software/networking issue with 0.4.0.1 before I consider a factory reset. Has anyone seen this exact progression (repeating “Server Connected” → Metrics never loading → “State Unknown”) on new hardware? Any guidance on what to check via direct console access (monitor+keyboard) would be appreciated, since I currently have no other way to pull logs.

Happy to provide kernel logs / screenshots once I can get local console access if that’s helpful for diagnosing this.

The fist thing you should try is if you purchased a server directly from Start9, is to once again try connecting to our Matrix support server, where you will be getting quicker responses from our team.

I would recommend you try a hard browser refresh:

Ctrl + Shift + R
CMD + Shift + R (On MacOS)

This looks like you are having connection issues from your client device (PC, Laptop, Mobile etc)

Thanks for the suggestion! I already tried a hard browser refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R) as well as a different browser/device, but the issue persists — the dashboard just gets stuck on “Loading” and never progresses. So I don’t think this is a client-side caching issue.

For context, I did purchase directly from Start9 and have been in touch with the Matrix support server. Based on that, we found that the NVMe drive appeared to have come loose in its socket, so I reseated it following their instructions. That got the server working normally for about an hour, but then the same symptoms returned (repeating “reconnecting” message) followed by a “Read-only file system (os error 30)” error on the backend.

So at this point it’s looking more like a deeper hardware or filesystem-level issue rather than a browser/connection problem, and I’m continuing to work with support on it directly. Will update this thread once we get to a resolution in case it helps anyone else hitting the same thing.
