Hi helpful folks,
I’m finally putting time towards the “1” of my 3-2-1 backup strategy (1 offsite copy).
Most of my data is stored in Nextcloud or File Browser on my server with StartOS. I am backing up StartOS to a storage drive attached to my router which is running OpenWRT (GL-X3000).
I am trying to figure out a good solution for automated backups to an offsite location. At the moment, I am using baqpaq on my workstation to back up the NAS’s samba share to a cloud account, while I figure out if OpenWRT on the router itself has the capacity to replicate the drive to an offsite location on a scheduled basis (so backup doesn’t depend on my workstation being on). I know TrueNAS and some other operating systems have this capacity, so I’m hoping OpenWRT does.
The longer game move is to install a second server at a friend’s house to serve as my offsite copy. This server will likely only be used for backup storage. I was initially thinking that this remote server would utilize TrueNAS, however after getting Syncthing setup up on my home StartOS server, I’m now wondering if there’s any way that installing StartOS and Syncthing on the remote server could make just as good of if not better sense? I’ll be building the offsite server from a raspberry pi 4, whether I go TrueNAS or StartOS, and I already know Syncthing can be installed on the X3000. I haven’t thought through the tor-only connection piece, though I know the X3000 also has tor capability.
Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts - or if they have a better suggestion for configuring off-site backup for the OpenWRT NAS (or from the StartOS server instead!). I really don’t want to buy yet another computer for my local network to serve as an NAS just for the remote replication functionality
