Onchain balance recovery (RaspberryPi4 8gb)

I have a Raspberry Pi that has been flawless until the last few weeks, I know that Start9 no longer recommends RPi hardware but I am where I am. I switched to “Bitcoin Knots” which may or may not be causing my nodes performance issues.

GOAL: Recover onchain balance - I am unclear how I do this, any topics or guides elsewhere speaks of the hsm_secret that is required in order to recover onchain balances. Note: I have never used the device for any lightning related activities so have never had any channel balances etc.

I originally used the Spark wallet until it no longer functioned due to upgrades to dependencies. I was then guided that the CLN app will give enough access unfortunately that is also now failing.

Core Lightning Health Check shows the following:

RPC - RPC interface is unreachable

Synced - error code: -28 error message: Loading block index…

Web UI - Web interface is unreachable

I also sometimes get the following error:

Synced - error: timeout on transient error: Could not connect to the server bitcoind.embassy:8332 (error code 1 - “EOF reached”) Make sure the bitcoin server is running and that you are connecting to the correct RPC port.

Any guidance or advice welcome

Thanks

Please clarify a bit more of what you are trying to do.

  • You mentioned you are trying to recover On chain funds

  • You also mentioned that you have never used your server for any Lightning related activities.

  • Please clarify who told you that CLN would “Give enough access”. (Be very careful of tips you might get, as not all are from legitimate users with your best interests in mind)

  • Where were your funds originally stored?

If you had anything stored on your Start9 server and made a backup by using this guide, then restoring is just a matter of using another server and following this other guide.

Thanks… My original balance was on Spark wallet on S9 server, that was until it no longer functioned due to an upgrade to CLN
(“Spark Wallet requires an install of Core Lightning satisfying >=0.10.1 <23.10.0”).
CLN was suggested as being just as good if not better than Spark Wallet in its usability. CLN did indeed give me the access I wanted and all has been fine. I was comfortable on reputation at that time and do not have any suspicions, it was over a year ago. TBH it has been fine and think it is just a hardware performance issue as indicated by the Core Lightning Health Check errors.
I have just tried to restore to another S9 server, following those links you sent.
I am getting the same Health Check errors. This leads me to think it is a hardware issue.

Other ideas:

  • if there was a way to roll back core lightning I could try opening Spark Wallet app again?
  • if there is another wallet I could configure to use instead?

Thanks

When you go to the marketplace, you can click on a service and click on versions to install, including older versions. Just like we don’t recommend you use a RPi for Bitcoin (because it not longer works for Bitcoin) we would similarly not recommend rolling back versions if important services. They may not work afterwards.

I assume this is an old machine you haven’t used in years. The services like Spark have not existed for a very very long time. If the funds at stake are significant, I’d transfer or restore backup to better hardware.
