Problems with Start9 server, not stopping services

I have been running my Start9 server for a while, and yesterday it had some problems indicated as “RPC Timed out. Retrying soon…” and similar for various services including Bitcoin Knots.
I then tried to stop all services, so I could reboot and see if that helped. Nearly 24 hours later and everything is still “Stopping” or “Stopping this may take a while…”
Specifications: RAM: 32 GB, currently using 22%
CPU: using 8.5%
SSD: 2 TB, currently using 70.3%, 587 GB available. I think it is using a lot of space for 2 backups I made on there.
I would like to delete 1 backup to make more space, but when trying to access backups it seems to get stuck on “Fetching Backup Targets”.
Also running on the server: Bisq, Core Lightning, electrs, Monero, Datum Gateway, Mempool, RoboSats.
Connected to the Bitcoin node I have a Bitcoin miner, which is currently still mining.
bitcoind logs shows that the Bitcoin node is still active.

So while everything is stuck in stopping mode but not stopping, nothing can be changed or accessed.
What can I do to resolve this?

I am accessing the server from a PC with browser.

“Connected” in green banner appears bottom left.

I tried also tried accessing the Start9 server from another browser, and it was all just the same, still trying to stop the various services.

I did not see anything useful in logs.

I cleared the browser cache and closed it, then reopened it. I use this browser to access Start9 server and not for general web browsing, but can also access the server from another browser.

I then paused mining on my miner.
In StartOS I selected the Restart option.
Now it is showing a yellow banner which says “Connecting”.

This typically means a lack of resources, which doesn’t seem likely in your case.

Generally this would be fixed by a simply server restart (System → Restart)

This by hard-refreshing your browser tab. Your server needs to be turned on, connected and your browser has to be looking at the right place, which it might not be after a restart.

I have tried connection on different browsers, 2 on my PC, and 1 on my smartphone. I have tried connecting via its IP address. The ARP table on the firewall shows the Start9 server still on the same IP address. Also connecting via the adjective-noun.local address.
Is it worth doing a hard reset? I would not want to mess up any files or settings if I do so.

From what you’re saying, a hard reset may be your only option. I’m not clear on how this happened though.

Thanks again for your help.

I have now hard rebooted and it seems to be working okay again.

Except now it is back to having errors, such as under Health checks for Bitcoin Knots, saying “RPC Timed out. Retrying soon…”

This is typically caused by a lack of resources… either…

  1. Not enough RAM
  2. Very slow processor
  3. Very slow drive

You can normally get by with just one of these being bad, but not two or more. There’s something not quite right with the hardware specs you provide.

Specs are: AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS (4 GHz), 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD
