Proxmox VM Installation errors

I’m looking for a solution that allows me to partition the space allocated to Start9 (DIY) without reserving the entire disk volume. Currently, I’m running two external 8TB hard drives connected to a mini-PC, which also contains a 1TB NVMe drive. I want to avoid using the NVMe drive since it will be reserved for future VMs/containers.

Initially, I considered partitioning one of the external drives in Proxmox and installing Start9 on 32GB of reserved space on the NVMe drive. However, I’m unable to progress with the installation.

I’ve tried different approaches, such as installing Start9 on the NVMe drive and passing through the external partition (but encountered a write-to-disk error, possibly RPC-related), and also running the installation from the external partition itself (which results in a black screen after setup and no CPU activity during login).

Is there a limitation with this approach, or is there something I should be aware of? Following the Proxmox guide using ZFS didn’t work either. Ideally, I’d like to run Start9 alongside other services/containers, which seemed perfect for my setup. Unfortunately, the process has been frustrating, with repeated disk corruptions and wipes.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Hi, have you had a read through our DIY Documentation?

If so you would see that the minimum storage requirement is 64GB and not 32 GB, which would probably be your first issue with your VM setup.

Please read through the guide & pay special attention to the Hardware section, especially the Recommended OS Requirements section.

Also, please note that StartOS expects exclusive access to the disk it’s installed on. Sharing a disk with other services or partitions isn’t supported.

As for passing through the external, here is a ProxMox video on how to achieve this for any VM in a ProxMox setup - https://youtu.be/U-UTMuhmC1U?si=cFIfeVq2UKYfatUn

Thanks, that makes sense.

I was able to eventually get the service to run exclusively off the hard drive, but will try again with an SSD and increased space for the install. Thanks for the pointers.
