Questions about services

do you lose any functionality on any of the services on start9 vs self hosting yourself? for example will integrations on nextcloud work the same on start 9 vs if you self host yourself? what are tradeoffs on services on start9 vs self hosting yourself? if you sideload a service is there any loss of functionality?

There is some confusion regarding the terms used here. For clarification, we use the term “self-host” to mean on hardware that you own and control. StartOS is an operating system designed specifically to make it easy for the average non-techie to self-host. StartOS and the services from the Marketplace come out of the box with highly opinionated and robust settings. This makes it generally plug-and-play for most users and also hard to break. The trade-off is the lack of flexibility you would have if you ran the same services on a Debian box or some other general-purpose Linux OS.

In the case of NextCloud, for example, not all integrations are compatible with the StartOS implementation. Only a few are actually supported, and many may break during a service update. NextCloud is much larger and more unwieldy than most services in this regard.

Sideloading is the process of installing a software package without using a Marketplace repository. The software must still be packaged for StartOS in order for it to be sideloaded. The functionality may be limited to what is intended by the package maintainer.
