I need some help badly. I started a lighnting channel on the Embassy 2.0. I created a backup of everything related to that: btcpayserver, btc-rpc-proxy, lnd, lnd-restore, and ride-the-lightning. i’m started up a new Embassy 3.0, but the restore from backup is only taking a full server back up.
How can i get it to restore from my backups?
i didn’t have a lot of BTC on there, but it wasn’t nothing.
For the new server you started, please confirm what version of StartOS it is running. Embassy / EmbassyOS are older versions replaced by StartOS in 2023 to early 2024. Any new server should be running StartOS v3.5.1.
Restoring from backup will force close any open channels. Do you still have your Embassy 2.0 server running? If so it’s probably easiest to just close the channels there and start fresh on your new server.
If you need to do a restore from backup, start with the documentation . If you click at the top where it says “Restore Specific Services” it provides instructions on restoring from backup for specific servicies only. If you decide you would prefer to restore the full server click where it says “Restore Entire Server”
i tried closing the channel on the old server, but they were stuck. i read that it was recommended “copy it into the corresponding v0.3.x volume path, then install LND and hope LND will perform the correct migrations on such old data.” but i don’t have the old server anymore. i tried the “restore specific service” but got “Drive partition does not contain a valid Start9 Server backup.”
i maybe have a copy of the ssd card, but i doubt it.
Sounds like your backups might have been years apart. I’m not criticizing, but didn’t you consider creating backups after the series of major upgrades you performed from EmbassyOS 0.2 all the way to StartOS 0.3.5.1? The upgrades involved a complete revisioning of so many things.
It’s not just the OS and different backups, but I’d suspect your LND backup is dozens and dozens of versions out of date too.
If you want to rescue these funds, my advice would be to set up a running version of an older version of EmbassyOS/StartOS from the time the backup was taken a restore to that. You might want to do this on whatever old hardware you had or have, or in a VM if possible.
i thought i did. i backed up all the services. i didn’t realize that there was a “whole system” back up . i got into the start 9 i wanted something to simplify the home server side. i do alright with computers but i’ve my limitations.
where can i find the old images so i can try and recreate the old os? I remember when i set up the server the first time, i needed to use an app. Is that avoidable?
This is what I’m asking really. If you backed up a recent version of StartOS, it should work. You either did or you didn’t - not that it really matters other for your own knowledge of whether this was within your control or not, since either way it says no backup is recognized.
The backups process backs up each service AND the os settings both. You should be able to restore individual services one by one (the os backup is only used when restoring from the flashing process). If not, then the backup is corrupted or not valid for this version of StartOS.
The older versions of StartOS are here listed in the relevant guides via a link to github:
But I can’t give you specific guidance as to what to do without knowing what hardware you have, if you can wipe it, or what your current status is with other services.
i can wipe it. its a raspberry pi 4. couldn’t tell you how much ram (not home right now).
I don’t know how to inform you of my current status with the other services. i backed up every service that was on the old embassy remotely related to bitcoin.
I’ll attempt when i get home tonight. i looked through the docs, but didn’t see any guides for the older version. i did find the image on github.
