Server One reflash issue

Long story short, I have not used my server in quite some time. The log in information did not transfer from my old phone to my new one some time back. I have since opted to reflash and set a new password, I followed the instructions on the website to reflash the server, I created the bootable USB drive but when restarting the server with the drive inserted I still get sent to the log in page with no options to do anything else. Also I can only reach the server via the IP address not using start.local. I reflashed the USB a few times now with no luck. I would like to resume using my server, I hate to have it just collecting dust.

It’s not booting from the flash drive. What Server do you have?

I have the server One with the built in hard drive

If the machine is skipping the USB drive each time you boot, the most likely explanation is that StartOS wasn’t correctly flashed to the USB drive.

I’d verify that you followed the above guide to the letter, and perhaps try another USB thumb drive as first steps.

I did verify the files were moved to the USB. But I will start over completely with a new thumb this afternoon, will keep you posted. Thank you!

How did you verify? Unless you’re using Linux, it’s fairly non-trivial to do so.

I followed the guide, got a whole new USB drive, pulled a new copy of the nonfree.iso from GitHub and still same effect. I end up at the startos log in screen in both chrome and brave.

You said that you verified that that “the files were moved to the USB”. I didn’t understand what this meant but it did sound like something was done incorrectly. Unless you’re using linux, you won’t even be able to detect the presence of the correctly flashed drive, let along view the contents as files.

You are correct, I pulled the files with Windows, I can see the boot file and another on the os image sitting on the thumb drive after I etch it. But I cannot actually verify the files have the right bit size. I have started over from the beginning several times now. I am using an older server, it does not resemble the ones they sell on the website now.

And here I think we get to the root of the problem. Does this happen to be a Raspberry Pi?

I was wondering that myself! Looks like I need to pull the micro SD and load the raspberry pi file instead. The older servers must be more aligned with the server pure not the server one. I will try that tonight and update the thread, thank you!

Yep, your process is easier, and this explains why the USB didn’t boot! :joy:

Yep, just follow the RaspberryPi guide… different image file, same BalenaEtcher, etc you just need something to read an SD card on your computer.

Raspberry pi for the win! Appreciate all the help!!

Hi, I have a Server One (not raspberry pi) and it has been bricked for a while. I have followed the guide to reflash the OS and am the page that says

Live Boot menu with GRUB.

When I select "Live system (amd64 fail-safe mode) to run I get a kernel panic.

Does this mean I am not booting fresh from the USB?

I have changed the UEFI Firmware Settings so that USB boot is first boot option.

Not clear if I am booting properly.

Are you now in DMs with George? I see you cross-posted this to the private server.
