Had a power cut recently and when my server pure powered back up it was no longer syncing and I received an Ethernet connection error.
So I did the following:
Bought brand new Ethernet cable to test
Got a brand new router / modem
I then tested my Ethernet with other devices and can confirm it works perfectly… but it still gives me the same error message on the Server Pure - so I assume there is some error with the Pure?
So I flashed a USB drive (ex-FAT) with the latest start-os update to try and reinstall everything. I plugged it into my Server Pure before turning on and it boots up to screen that also tells me there’s no Ethernet connection and to contact support (and gives series of options, restarting, repairing drive etc).
I can’t figure out how to fix the issue and get it back up and running. Could anyone please help? Thanks!
Let’s try to get a bearing on what happened here. I need to fill in a few gaps. Please tell me about this “Ethernet connection error.” Do you know what the actual error was, and where did you see it?
I’m a bit confused how we went from the ethernet connection error to a brand new router / modem. What were the circumstances, or steps in between those two?
Yes sorry - so the original error showed a “clock syncing error”. It gave me a link to the docs which indicated there was a connection issue.
I wasn’t able to login normally using my phone or desktop browser like I did before… I had to plug a display and keyboard/mouse into the Server Pure to actually get access to the main menu and login from there (which showed all the apps weren’t syncing and where I saw the “clock syncing error”.
At that point I tried re-starting the server (multiple times), restarting the router/modem, and then -when none of that worked - thinking it must be an error with my router/modem or the Ethernet cable - ended up switching those out too. But that still hasn’t fixed it.
Hopefully that fills in the gap sufficiently- but let me know if there’s anything else you need. Thanks.
When you clicked this link, did it take you to the page you posted a picture of? I’m still missing how we went from clock sync error to the error screen you posted in your OP.
Different screen to if I boot the Pure up without the USB thumb-drive. But it doesn’t give me any options to reinstall the OS. Just that there’s Ethernet connection error and to contact support (or restart/repair drive on server).
If I boot up the Server without the thumb drive inserted (that contains flashed start-os) then it boots up to standard log-in screen).
Process I went through to install Start-OS on USB drive was:
Format drive to exFAT
Download latest version of StartOS from GitHub to my Mac. (startos-0.3.5.1-39de098_x86_64.iso)
Use Balena Etcher to flash my USB drive with the start-os .iso file.
Insert the USB drive into one of the front USB 3.0 slots (top left hand corner) of my Server Pure - and then power the Pure on.
(which boots up to screen that says cannot detect Ethernet connection and to contact support).
There’s every possibility that your hardware has failed, but you’re on the right track to confirm whether this is the case, or whether you’re suffering from some unusual edge case.
Reflashing is the correct approach.
Inserting the USB in the front ports though is probably not. Try the main blue ports on the back to be sure, and also try any other thumb drive you have around just in case that’s the issue.
If we can get the machine reflashed and have the same ethernet error appear, it’ll be time to email me at support@start9.com with your order number and a link to this post.
