I am able to successfully run the first command in Command Prompt as an admin, but when I enter the second (sc start tor) it gives me, (startservice FAILED 2)
I’ve uninstalled Tor multiple times and even removed and readded the certificate mutiple times to see if there was a problem there. No luck
Feels like I’m a little out of my depth here, lol
For future reference in these types of requests for support it’s good to go into a bit more detail… from what your OS is, to what you’re tried so far, with fuller more detailed output copied from the console.
In this case though, I see you’re setting up Tor system wide on Windows.
First question… why? There’s a prominent note before you get to this stage that says most people don’t need to do this, and that most people can get away with just using Tor Browser instead. This means they only connect to Tor and access .onions when they open Tor Browser itself.
The reason we recommend this is because it can be tricky for some non-technical users to enter all the commands correctly. For example, in your case, I can assure you that the instructions are correct and work, so whatever you’re missing in the guide is causing your setup to fail… that you feel out of your depth is completely fine, and so we’d recommend only setting up what you need to set up.
Personally, if you’re going to set up anything for the sake to setting it up and learning, I’d prefer you go through the SSH process (the standard one, not the Tor one).
Secondly… From your description, I’m not confident that you’re not following the guide exactly. Why have you re-added the certificate multiple times? This isn’t part of the Tor setup guide at all, and is completely unrelated to Tor.
To set up Tor on Windows, you follow this guide EXACTLY, without even the slightest deviation. Not even an extra .
or space in any command, and installing things exactly where we say in the order we say.
I was initially following along with a video tutorial. The first few steps went well. I selected start fresh, then I selected the storage drive, (the only option available). Then I entered a password and it went to initialize startOS. Next it gave me the option to download a file. I clicked the download button but it froze the page. Nothing downloaded and I waited a few minutes. I ended up closing the page and went to my history and reopened the page and it took me directly to the (trust your root CA) page. I followed the instructions on there to a t. I went to mmc as an admin and followed the directions. I have the certificate in there and everything looks like the screen shots in the instructions. But when I hit refresh, it tells me that the site can’t be reached. Went back into my history in hopes that I could retrace my steps but can’t seem to find a way to do so. Then I went and tried to setup the Tor system in hopes that I would be able to somehow get further along and ran into the issues I described earlier. I’m frustrated as I’ve been trying everything I can think of for 3 days now. Hope that this makes sense. There’s a good chance it’s user error but I can’t find a way to retrace my steps to see where I went wrong
I have Windows 11 installed.
Also I am using the Brave Browser
What site can’t be reached?
There are two possible URLs…
start.local - which goes away after the install and you would no longer use
…and your unique adjective-noun.local which is what works after you’ve finished setting things up.
If you can’t reach your adjective-noun.local then there is something very wrong, and this has nothing to do with Tor.
These are some initial steps to take:
https://docs.start9.com/0.3.5.x/support/common-issues#i-am-unable-to-reach-my-server-via-its-custom-address-local-lan-address
Ok, so I hit ctrl+shift+R and entered my adjective-noun.local and I was able to move on. Definitely user error. Thank you for your patience!
