It looks like much progress has been made over the last few months regarding accessing a local Start9 server from behind a VPN:
My VPN setup is as follows:
Cable Modem → Raspberry Pi with VPN → Router with all local connections, each with a static IP address
With this setup, can I access my Start9 remotely? From the guide, I have the impression that I may need to move the VPN to the actual router or perhaps create a StartTunnel. If my current setup should work, how can I test it? I am not understanding what the next step would be.
Also, I am familiar with OpenVPN and have it already installed on my phone/laptop with the same VPN provider.
The docs you are looking at are in the 0.4.0 branch of StartOS - so if you are testing the 0.4.0 Alpha you can follow those docs and set up the VPN and access your StartOS server and services remotely. Be aware that this is an alpha release and may have issues. Also, Alpha 19 is currently the latest but there are a number of significant changes in Alpha 20 - so you may want to hold off setting up your VPN until the next StartOS alpha release.
StartTunnel offers an “easy button” - assisting you in setting up a VPS as a router for private remote access to self-hosted services, or to expose services to the public Internet without revealing your server’s IP address.
Hi Jesse. I am on version 0.3.5-1. I don’t mind alpha testing the VPN but if you expect the release in the next month or so, I can just as easily wait. But if the testing will go on for an indefinite period of time, I’d like to assist with the debugging.
If you have a test StartOS server you can use for testing with the Alpha releases that would be great. The more testing we get done on the alpha versions the more bugs / use cases we find and the more stable the beta and then eventually production releases will be.
You can find the 0.4.0 alpha releases (along with the production 0.3.5.1 release) on Github.
I believe there will be an upgrade path to 0.4.0 after it is released to production. Since it is still in alpha testing there is no tested upgrade now.
This is Alpha - you shouldn’t be using for any important data. If you don’t have a test server, just relax, be patient and let others do the testing…
