Share Files with External Users

File share works fine on clients with LAN access setup and login completed. When I send a file share to an outside email, the link returns "Hmmm… can’t reach this page with the problem “Your DNS server may be unavailable.” How do I fix this to share files in NextCloud to external emails?

Are you sharing .onion addresses with people? Or .local addresses?

It would stand to reason that you can’t share a .local address with someone outside your network, and someone who isn’t running Tor can’t open a .onion.

In the next version of StartOS, you’ll be able to port forward from your router so people can connect to you via your IP address.

@StuPleb Appreciate the quick response. Tried sharing .local as none of our customers are using Tor, but now seeing why that wouldn’t work.

Will the future port forward method work for outside customers similar to receiving a link for file sharing from Box/Dropbox/Sharepoint/etc.?

ETA for next StartOS version?

Thank you.

Yes, so your home/office IP address can be reached from anywhere on the internet… you can even connect a domain name to it. This will allow you to create a kind of direct equivalent of those services you mention.

The public Beta of v0.3.6 is coming in a timeframe measured in weeks.
