Size of backup files

I’m planning on setting-up a 2nd internal hard drive to use for regular backups of my new Start9 server & node.

The SSD that I will be using however is just 750GB in size however - perhaps not large enough to store an entire full node backup. I may therefore not go through all the trouble of installing it, if it is unlikely to be sufficient.

I wanted to ask, if choosing to backup everything is there any sort of compression or size reduction for the backup files? What size are all your backups (with unpruned bitcoin full node included)?

The backup does not include the actual block data so it will be much smaller than the full node itself

Good to know, thanks. Making block data easy to backup too would be a nice bonus. It’s a pain to do each time we need to bootstrap a new node.

I imagine it can be done via the terminal fairly easily or by cloning the drive before the computer/server boots.

Yes if you search the forum you can find instructions for that or this link here Start9 | Blockchain Migration

I usually just do it the slow and painful way

Thank you Rick! Hadn’t spotted that guide.

Gotta say I am really loving the performance and stability of Start9 so far. And getting a speedy response on the forums adds to those great first impressions.

(Running the node on an old Mac Mini and even during hotter days, the fan hasn’t kicked into gear once. Stark contrast to other rival systems).

To add to what Rick said, it’s important to understand that Backups are for emergency recovery. Not migration. Not so important until you have open lightning channels. But I think it’s important to conceptualize correctly, to avoid pit-falls in the future.

What is the recommended size drive needed especially if one has an lnd running? Is 750GB too much as op mentioned?

It’s hard to say. It really depends on if you are doing a lot of file storage on nextcloud or file browser. I don’t think there is any such thing as too much but 750gb seems reasonable for most use cases if you are not storing huge media files
