Given the intrusive nature of legacy cell communications- I’d love to be able to host my own Snikett server in Start9.
JMP Chat https://jmp.chat/ is a fantastic offering allowing users to channel cell phone comms off the legacy cell network. But the service requires a Snikket server instance. JMP Chat offers a free Snikket instance, but all data goes through the JMP Snikket server- creating a trusted third party.
Better would be to create the folowing stack:
-
Cheogram (JMP Chat app)
-
Running on a self-hosted Snikket instance in Start9
-
A cell phone powered through an anonymously sourced data-only Esim in international roaming mode (enhanced privacy in such a mode)
Granted- with this setup only JMP Chat to JMP Chat comms will be fully secure and private -JMP Chat to legacy calls/SMS will be exposed to the legacy machine. But something is better than nothing, and at least this setup does break other intrusive aspects of the legacy cell system (location tracking, etc) as well as protect against some types of sim attacks.
But packaging Snikket is beyond my capabilities. I’m hoping others (with more skill than I) will investigate the JMP Chat/Cheotgram/Snikett offering and package Snikett for the community!
