Often the problem is TOR. verify that you can access your StartOS server / other services via TOR. Check the TOR log for errors on your StartOS server. System → Insights → TOR logs. If you find TOR is not working on your server you can restart TOR at System → Manage → Experimental Features → Reset TOR.
Thanks for this and I ran through the TOR check. I can access through .onion. I’m still getting, “Could not connect: SOCKS server general failure. Check if the proxy server is running.”
Are you running Tor in the background in Windows? Or are you relying on the inbuilt Sparrow Tor connection? It sounds like you’re running both at the same time.
In Windows you MUST choose one or the other.
If you’re running Tor in the background as a service, in Sparrow you have to choose Proxy at the time of setting up the connection and add 127.0.0.1 as the host and 9050 as the port. Then completely close out Sparrow and wait. Then open it again, and it will not try to open Tor itself, and instead use the system service.
Hello. I am having the same issue, running Sparrow 1.7.9 on Mac. Trying to configure Sparrow to use Private Electrum Server. I follow the guide and use my host name and port from Start9. I press Test Connection but it never connects. It just says “Connecting to…” forever.
Try restarting everything. I also use mac and sometimes the test connection fails, but when I shut down sparrow and restart it connects and the blue toggle show up in the bottom right. If you are following the guide and got your settings right then the other thing is to test if you can connect to StartOS with you .onion. If you can’t you can go to system - > experimental features and reset Tor. Try first without checking wipe state and if that doesn’t work you can wipe the state. Tor can be temperamental and sometimes it takes a few tries to get a good connection.
(But again, my test connection usually fails on Sparrow, but when I shut it down and restart it does connect)
Sparrow DOES successfully connect to other Public Servers. But I will try restarting my machine and all the software tomorrow
“the other thing is to test if you can connect to StartOS with you .onion”
I wonder if it has to do with Tor. I am not so familiar with how tor works. When you suggest to try this, does that mean paste my Electrs hostname into my web browser (firefox)?
You need to work carefully through this guide to make sure Tor is set up system wide on your machine. Make sure to select the appropriate operating system for each of the clients that you set up Tor on. Start9 | Connecting Remotely
