Start OS 0.4.0 timeline

Does anyone have any idea when we can expect a Start9 update to 0.4.0? I’m really looking forward to the improved networking features.

Hi! Welcome to the community. No timeline. But you can follow the 0.4.0 development on github. We’re still cleaning up a few known bugs, but last I heard Alpha10, was working really well, and very few changes are expected before going into public beta. We’re getting there. We’ll soon see how well it holds up to you guys pounding on it. :wink:

That’s awesome to read! I did check in on the Git and saw it was “88% complete, 19 open and 143 closed” issues. A few P1 issues are blocking release, including a long-standing one from September 2022.

@Rexter hey Mike,
I know you said we could track progress on the Git, but in (at least) 2 months the progress hasn’t budged. I know 0.4 is a big milestone to get right, but since it’s been soooo long coming, we really have no idea where we’re at since every response is just “soon now”. I feel like a kid on a long roadtrip car ride asking “are we there yet?”

I appreciate your position. We’re all really excited about it as well. The only thing I know otherwise is from the testing dev chat. I know they’re hard at work on it, and making progress every day. I expect the next Alpha to drop any day now. If you have a test machine, you could install the latest Alpha, and play with it. Just don’t put any money on data on their, unless you’re willing to lose it.

@Rexter Hey Mike,
I just installed Bitcoin Knots and I thought I’d check in on how the progress is going on the new OS 0.4 timeline. I checked the Github link and it still shows 88% complete, 20 open and 155 closed, which is one more open than back in September, and several are still blocking.
So I just thought I’d ask how it’s coming? Are you out of alpha into beta, or are you still a ways off?

As bugs are found and added to this list, that is progress rather than regression, since by finding these bugs we are moving further along. The number of open doesn’t have much meaning.

Currently we’re on Alpha17 and we’re expecting an Alpha18 before Beta.

Ah, I see I wasn’t looking in the correct place on the Github. For anyone interested, look under releases.

When this discussion thread started in September alpha v10 was current, and alpha v17 was released 2 weeks ago in January.

@StuPleb Thanks for that update, is this matrix dev room where we can follow the pre-release discussion for what to expect?

Yeah, that’s the Matrix room. You’re welcome to flash a spare device and try it out too.

So… if we just happened to install alpha v17 and added funds, what are the chances that everything will work as intended? I’m a little impatient for this highly anticipated release lol

It won’t “just work.” You’d have to be willing to tinker with it. It this point the feature-set is pretty stable, but it still has know critical bugs, as discussed above.

If you’re going test it, it should be on a secondary machine that is not needed for anything mission critical.

I assumed so haha. Just didn’t know how far along the programming has come since I haven’t dove deep into the github. Thanks, @Rexter!
