**Start9 Pure completely unresponsive after Bitcoin Knots 29.3.1 config save — no ping, no display, no SSH**

Hi all,

My Start9 Pure has been completely offline for approximately 48 hours after saving the Bitcoin Knots 29.3.1 configuration. I’m hoping someone has seen this and can point me toward a recovery path.

What happened:
I received the Bitcoin Knots 29.3.1 update notification. The install initially failed with the error: ‘Install of bitcoind@29.3.1 Failed: Config Generation Error: No Match: consensusrules: Field Is Not Nullable’

The service showed ‘Needs Config’. I opened Config, saw the new ‘Consensus Rules (New)’ field pre-populated with ‘rdts’, verified my Tor-only settings (Disable Clearnet ON, V2 P2P Transport ON) were intact, and hit Save.

Knots showed ‘Stopping this may take a while…’ — and then all services went to ‘Unknown’. Shortly after the web UI became unreachable entirely.

Current state:

  • No ping response to 10.0.10.225
  • SSH times out (ssh start9@10.0.10.225 — ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)
  • Web UI unreachable at both https://10.0.10.225 and http://start.local
  • No display signal on HDMI (tried multiple ports, monitor confirmed working)
  • No audio from the unit (no Beethoven’s 5th / Diagnostic Mode audio)
  • Solid white power LED — unit is powered
  • Multiple power cycles performed including leaving overnight — no change

What I’ve tried:

  • Hard power cycle (unplug, 60 seconds, replug) — multiple times
  • Left overnight after power cycle — no change
  • Tried http://start.local — timeout
  • Tried direct IP via HTTP and HTTPS — both timeout
  • Connected monitor before power-on across all HDMI ports — no display signal at any point including POST/BIOS
  • SSH attempt — connection timeout

Hardware:

  • Start9 Pure (exact model/year uncertain — trying to confirm)
  • Connected via ethernet to LAN, static IP 10.0.10.225
  • On UPS

What I have ready:

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS live USB prepared via Balena Etcher on a 64GB Kingston DataTraveler
  • Willing to attempt USB boot recovery

Primary questions:

  1. Has anyone else had the Start9 Pure go completely unresponsive (no ping, no display, no SSH) after the 29.3.1 Knots config save? Is this a known issue?
  2. What is the correct boot menu key for the Start9 Pure to attempt a USB live boot?
  3. Is there a known recovery procedure for this specific failure mode?
  4. Any way to confirm whether the OS or the data partition is the problem?

My main concern is preserving the data on the drive (full Bitcoin blockchain, Gitea, Vaultwarden). I am not looking to wipe and reinstall unless absolutely necessary.

Any help appreciated. Thank you.

I went to “Power” and hit “System Rebuild”. This worked for me.

“Thank you — System Rebuild sounds exactly right for this failure. But my web UI is completely unreachable (no ping/SSH/UI). How do I trigger System Rebuild when I can’t reach the Power menu in the UI? Is there a physical or boot-level method on the Pure?”

Im also interested inf someone has a solution for this.

There is no known issue with the Knots update that would brick your server like this. I suspect either the ethernet cable is disconnected, or the server has been assigned a new IP address. Check the ethernet cable on both ends. Next go into your router config, and look for a list of connected devices to find the IP address. Look for a device name that corresponds with your server’s adjective-noun.local address, or just “start.” There you should be able find it’s new IP address.
