So I just got my bitaxe in the mail today and decided to set it up via Datum gateway. Everything was going well following the datum instructions until it came time to copy and paste the code as the instructed to do. For some reason my computer wasn’t allowing me to copy the lines of code required during that step from the instruction page on start9 into my windows command prompt and I made a couple of mistakes. Now my start9 won’t connect to the internet anymore. Before that happened I got some kind of RPC error when attempting to login and now it won’t even connect to the internet like it was before. I feel discouraged right now and don’t know what to do next. I tried a hard reboot and still nothing.
As the warnings say, entering the commands incorrectly could resulting in the server no longer working. i.e. your case. But we can fix it.
It’s pretty much impossible to try to reverse the damage efficiently, so we’d need to reinstall the OS to get it back in working condition. You don’t mention an details about your hardware, but since you’re here and not on the private support server, I’ll assume this is a DIY device and you know how to install StartOS.
First you’d work through the relevant flashing guide for your type of device:
Then you’d work through the reinstall of the OS while preserving existing data:
This would leave you back in the position you were in before you entered the commands incorrectly, and could now enter those vary carefully.
I forgot to mention I’m using a server 1.
After looking at these instructions I think I’m just going to buy a new server. I think it’s important that the newest version of start0S be implemented so those steps in datum gateway that contributed to this problem don’t need to be executed anymore (which is the case from what I understand)
While these instructions provided are probably easier than they look for someone with more computer experience, I don’t want to be further frustrated because I’ll end up not wanting to run a node anymore.
My next questions are:
- Why wasn’t I able to copy the code? I was using a server one with a windows laptop. I want to know because if I have to try this again once I get the new server I want to know what to do to be able to copy it.
2 Once I get the new server I have to start everything over or can I just enter my .local address and be able to continue where I left off?
You certainly don’t need a new server when this simple error can be solved by a simple reinstall. It’s not a difficult process, it just involves slowly are carefully going through the flashing guide. Importantly, once you do it the first time, you’ll gain confidence and when you need to do it in the future (you never know) you’ll feel much better about it. Plus, logically, if you’re willing to buy a new server anyway, what’s the worst that could happen if you try to fix this one?
Ultimately, if you really really have to, you could send it back to us, we could factory reset it for you, but it’s trivial to do with the guides, I promise.

I don’t really know much about Windows copying and pasting issues. I can’t imagine ctrl-c and ctrl-v not working as expected. You might want to find an experienced and technical Windows user to point out what you were doing wrong. From here, the only thing I can guess at is that you were copying and pasting more than one line at a time, or missed some characters.

No, a new server would be a new server… if you buy a new server it won’t have any of your data on it, and when you set it up, you’d get a new and unique .local
Ok, I’ll give it a try at least once first and if I’m unsuccessful I’ll send it back to be factory reset.
Can I use a a 32 GB mico with an usb adapter?
If you mean an SD card with an adapter… probably not. That tends not to boot in many cases.
Ok, the most important question though. Do I need a keyboard and mouse to plug into the server for part of this process or will I be able to use my laptop?
