StartOS Use Cases | Raspberry Pi 4 + 4GB RAM + 1 TB External SSD

Hello,

After making the transition from a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB RAM w/ 1 TB external SSD to a NUC for Bitcoin-related applications on StartOS - working great thus far - I am now left with this aforementioned Raspberry Pi.

Therefore, I am thinking to repurpose this device for running the following apps on StartOS:

  • FreeGPT2
  • SimpleX Server
  • Nostr RS Relay
  • Nextcloud

To what extent is this possible with this device? Which app(s) would likely ask too much of its specs and therefore is/are better not to install/use?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Welcome, 7jw2a!

Your Raspberry Pi 4 should handle SimpleX Server, Nostr RS Relay, and Nextcloud without issue, but FreeGPT2 will struggle due to high resource demands. Running a disk over USB can cause instability, performance issues, or even data corruption. To improve reliability, consider either using a large, high-quality SD card or placing your external disk in a powered enclosure to avoid power-related issues.

It can sometimes be useful to separate by usecase rather than service. So you could use it form “private comms”, “social media” or “service files” and offload those functions from the NUC. Just an idea.

Thank you @h0mer . Good to know, I already thought FreeGPT2 would ask too much of this device. About the external SSD: I actually have a 2TB microSD which I currently do not use for anything. Would it make sense to use this microSD instead of the 1TB external SSD? Then I could use the 1TB external SSD as an extra, fully offline backup SSD for (important) files for example. Any other suggested use case(s) for this 1TB external SSD?

@StuPleb , the NUC is fully dedicated to Bitcoin-related stuff, i.e., I will not install any non-BTC apps on that one going forward. To what extent would it be OK though to install SimpleX, Nostr RS Relay and Nextcloud all together on my Raspberry Pi 4 from your point-of-view?

I’m not necessarily saying you should separate things in any particular way, just that you can. Personally I keep Bitcoin and Nextcloud on the same device as these are my “important” services.

Yes you can run SimpleX, Nostr RS Relay and Nextcloud on a Pi without a problem. The only thing I can think of that would be a concern is speed if you’re using an external USB drive, data integrity if using a USB drive, and quality (and capacity) of a microSD card if using just that. These are things that I’d worry about if using Nextcloud for anything important.
