I have some extra static ip’s available from my ISP is it worth using on my start9 machine? It is my bitcoin node that I will be using my bitaxe to mine on. Instead of port forwarding Id rather dedicate its own internet ip.
Hllo there
For the bitaxe itself I don’t think you need it. Your miner talks to the node
(or to a solo pool running on the server) over the LAN, so there’s probably no
inbound connection to forward and nothing a public IP would solve there.
One thing to check too: depending on your router, giving a device its own public
IP usually still means setting something up (1:1 NAT, passthrough, DMZ), so it
may not really replace port forwarding. And a box sitting directly on a public
IP is outside the router firewall, which we’d generally steer away from —
StartOS is built as a private home server.
Where it could make sense is running a listening Bitcoin node with inbound peers
on 8333, though that does tie your node to your home IP. Tor gets you inbound
peers without that.
What StartOS version are you on? On 0.3.5.1 it’s LAN or Tor only, so I’d expect
a public IP to do very little. On 0.4.0 you can expose services on a public
domain — either open ports on the router, or a Wireguard reverse tunnel like
StartTunnel on a cheap VPS if you’d rather not show your IP.
