Unable to connect to Start9 .local services from Windows or Android devices

Quick edit. Shortly after posting this on my Windows machine I went to the Start9 page where you can download the Bonjour software directly from Start9 (page: Start9 | Connecting Locally ). After installing this Bonjour software, even without a restart I was immediately able to reach my .local services. Great news!
So that is a tip for other people experiencing similar problem. Don’t download the Bonjour software from Apple. Instead get the Bonjour software from this website.

The only problem that remains is that I can’t reach the services locally on my Android device (Samsung). As stated I downloaded the Root CA certificate and added it as required to the device. Unfortunately that did not solve the connectivity problem.
If anyone has a golden tip, that would be very welcome:)

Guys I have a peculiar problem.

I’m using Windows 11, Android and iOS devices on my local network.
I installed ‘Root CA’ certificate on all of the devices properly and according to Start9 manual.

On iOS device I can connect to the Start9 server and start all of the services ending in .local (I’m on the local network) and they start up properly. (Ideal situation)

However the problems start when I connect to Start9 server from Windows 11 or an Android device. In both situations when I try to open a .local service like ‘File Browser’ or ‘SearXNG’ (or any other) then the page is opened in a new tab with the message that the website cannot be reached. MS Edge gives in addition the following message: ‘DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN’.

What have I done on Windows 11 to try to fix this problem:

  • I reinstalled the Bonjour service (it was already running). I checked the service is running properly in Windows (visible as well in the Task Manager).
  • I tried downloading and adding the Root CA certificate again to Windows and Android device.
  • On Start9 I tried ‘System Rebuild’, but that did not help.

On Android device I also added the Root CA certificate. But it is added once for the entire device.

In both Windows as on Android I tried using three or four different browsers to log into Start9 and to start those services, but unfortunately with the same result.

In service ‘SearXNG’ I have ‘Tnable Tor address as base URL’ turned Off.

As the local services can be started on iOS device I guess the services are working correctly, it’s just that somehow I cannot reach them from Windoze or Android.

I also tried exiting my VPN and ending any VPN services in task manager, but that didn’t help.

I’m really out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi lurker, did you try all the steps listed in this guide? Start9 | Common Issues

Let us know which steps worked and which don’t work.

What error are you getting in the android browser and which browser is it?

Edit: if the anchor in that URL doesn’t work, the part of the document I was suggesting you try is the part titled “I am unable to reach my server via its .local (LAN) address”

For your Samsung, you should determine if the issue is the particular browser you are using or if it’s Android itself. Is this an old phone?
