I tried out upgrading to 4.0, and congratz on the new OS, it’s a huge improvement!!! I wanted to share some of the pain points I encountered while upgrading:
My system: Lenovo ThinkCentre M910q, Quad Core i5-6500T 3.1GHz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD
- The interface lags, both the mouse cursor, and the clicks. Not terribly, it’s usable, but it’s noticeable and it makes the whole thing feel slow.
- Knots 29.3.1 did not offer an option to update upon first boot like all the other apps. This forced me to resync the blockchain, which was an abolute pain.
- Jam and Syncthing did not have updated versions to 4.0, only legacy. That’s ok, I did not expect all apps to be available right away in the new OS. But it would have been nice to know that in advance. Syncthing is something I rely on a lot, and being surprised was a big headache.
- Clock did not sync, so I had a permanent alert notification I could not get rid of. The info simply said to contact support. Please give users a way to dismiss those notifications, or an easy way to fix it.
In the end, I chose to revert to 3.5.1 until things get ironed out a bit more. Maybe some of those things are known issues, or maybe they are particular to my system, but overall I think 4.0 has a lot of promise and is a giant step in the right direction, specially under the hood. It’s just that the UX for the migration needs some improvement. It is quite painful at the moment.
