USB backup Error

Hello all, I am trying to do a backup onto my Samsung 64GB USB drive but I am getting this message. Not sure how to solve it.

RPC ERROR: Filesystem I/O Error mount: /media/embassy/tmp/J6EGJAOMFBTLXBOGRWFDWFGSLEQ2WHY3GILVAKQHNSIFTW7X2XAA: unknown filesystem type ‘ntfs’. dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

I have formatted the USB thinking that might have been the issue with no luck. It’s a new USB purchased 3 months ago and used for running the StatOS on my DIY mini PC.

Not sure if this it also important. When I insert the usb drive into the laptop, I can see the drive recognized, but there is also another USB Drive that pops up at the same time with 5MB of space.

There are two folders in the 5MB “partition” (not sure if that’s the correct word for it). A “boot” folder and an “EFI” folder which has the following files: “bootia32.efi”, “bootx64.efi”, and “grubx64.efi”. I didn’t want to delete them in case they were important.

Thank you!

Backing up to USB thumb drive or SD card media is highly discouraged, as low-quality flash memory is easily corruptible. You might consider doing a backup to a network folder instead.

Please see our guide here:

Only Linux machines natively support ext4. If you don’t have one as a daily driver, you can boot into an Ubuntu live session, as well as most other Linux distributions, and use the built in disk utility.

I read that it a USB might be easily corruptible, but the reason I was going that route is because I’m having problem backing up to a network folder since the system can’t recognize my Hostname/IP.

I went into the command prompt and typed whoami to get my windows user name. But when I use this user name, I get an error “RPC ERROR: Net Address Parsing Error invalid IP address Syntax”

If i type my Ip address, it gives me an even longer Error Message.

Hi there.

Can you share a screenshot with your network folder configuration? Sounds like you type something wrong when creating network backup.

That most likely is the case.

Is this the screenshot you are asking about?

The second picture is of the Error I get if I input my IP address:

Hostname should not include the username

Path, is the network path to the shared folder. Not the full path on the host machine

The user needs to be a local only user. Not a user connected to a Microsoft account. I recommend creating a backup user, that’s used solely for this purpose.
