Having trouble all of a sudden accessing my Vaultwarden UI in Firefox. Error given:
SECURE CONNECTION FAILED
Error code: PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified
Health check shows: “Success : Ready to visit in a web browser”
Have rechecked Firefox settings for trusting Start9 CA in Firefox and in Windows Console and all is well.
Curiously, have no trouble accessing other app UI’s such as Nextcloud.
Anyone else experiencing this recently and have any ideas on what it could be and how to address? Have tried a system rebuild as well.
The PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR typically means Firefox is having trouble negotiating a TLS connection. Since other apps like Nextcloud work fine, the issue seems specific to Vaultwarden.
Here are some troubleshooting steps to try:
Clear Firefox Cache:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Clear Data.
Restart Firefox and try again.
Check Certificates:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > View Certificates.
Ensure the Start9 CA is trusted. Follow the trust CA guide if needed.
Test Another Browser:
Try accessing Vaultwarden via Chrome or Edge to check if it’s Firefox-specific.
Review Logs:
If the issue persists, check Vaultwarden logs for errors. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve the problem.
Clearing cache did not result in a successful outcome.
Check certificates: Followed the guide and reloaded the Start9 CA certificate in MMC and checked in Firefox. In Firefox I don’t see the certificate in the same format as in MMC i.e. .local. But what I do see is Start9 as a certificate authority and a number of sub entries under that as follows: “StartOS Local Intermediate CA” - “Software Security Device”
I tested Chromium and get “This site can’t be reached”. No problem with Nextcloud UI though.
When trying to review logs (both in Firefox and Chromium) I get a blank screen. I checked if this is common with other applications eg. Nextcloud and noted that there, I could see and download logs successfully.
Wondering if the trouble is with the Vaultwarden application itself.
I’m not sure what’s going on, but for more hands-on troubleshooting, the best option is to join our support community at https://start9.me. That said, I recommend going through our guides again to ensure your client is configured properly (trusting your RootCA and setting up Firefox correctly). Make sure you follow the appropriate guide for your operating system when trusting your RootCA and configuring Firefox.
If everything is set up correctly, the next step would be to examine your Bitwarden service. Try restarting the service, rebooting the system, or performing a fresh install if you have a backup. This service is well-tested and widely used, so it’s most likely an issue with your setup.
