Fresh StartOS 0.4.0-beta.5 on Dell OptiPlex 5060 + Calix GigaSpire BLAST u6t — NetworkManager "returned no devices" + no LAN IP + WAN IP Error in Gateways

Hello everyone,

I’m having persistent networking issues with a fresh install of StartOS 0.4.0-beta.5 (nonfree ISO) on a Dell OptiPlex 5060 connected via Ethernet to a Calix GigaSpire BLAST u6t (GS5229E) router.

Hardware:

  • Dell OptiPlex 5060

  • Calix GigaSpire BLAST u6t router

  • Ethernet cable: CAT5e 350 MHz 24AWG

  • Monitor + keyboard attached for local access

What I’ve done:

  • Completely wiped the SSD and did a fresh flash/install of beta.5 (previously tried beta.3 with identical results).

  • Router shows perfect internet: public WAN IP, packets flowing, DNS good.

  • Ethernet lights on OptiPlex: solid green + flashing amber (link is up).

  • BIOS: Integrated NIC enabled, FastBoot set to “thorough”

  • Tried static DHCP reservation on the Calix.

  • Lowered router firewall to medium (then back to high) — no change.

Symptoms:

  • During boot: sticks for a while on Job NetworkManager-wait-online.service/start running (___s / no limit) (eventually continues).

  • **In System → Gateways: For “Wired Connection 1”, shows LAN IP as the one that I reserved for the MAC address of the Optiplex, but WAN IP = “Error” and “port forwarding rules required” with no specific ports listed. **

  • OS Logs show repeated critical errors:

    • Network Error: NetworkManager returned no devices. Trying again…

    • NetworkManager returned no devices.

    • All gateway sync lines show ip_info: None, lan_ip: {}, wan_ip: None, gateway_type: None, only loopback/bridge devices.

    • Later: Initialized Net Controller but the gateway never populates properly.

    • **After some time, it recognizes the gateway - error logs show the same thing every 10 minutes**:
      0: startos: :net: :gateway: :watch_ip with iface=GatewayId(“eno1”)
      at src/net/gateway, rs:941
      l: startos: :net: :gateway: :watcher
      at src/net/gateway.rs:702
Backtrace omitted. Run with RUST_BACKTRACE=1 environment variable to display it.
Run with RUST_BACKTRACE=full to include source snippets

I used the x86_64 nonfree iso.

Thanks in advance — happy to provide more logs, screenshots, or try any commands from the local UI.

Btw - first ever StartOS user, so I’m not updating from the previous versions, just flashed the absolute latest version (0.4.0-beta.5) onto a clean USB and booted my Optiplex from it.

StartOS may be missing a necessary driver for that machine. Keep in mind that StartOS is designed for, and only tested by us on machines that we sell. If you get the 5060 to work, please report it here.

If you’re willing to experiment, you might try some of the hacks others have done to get unsupported machines to work. Since your issues seems to revolve around a missing network driver, you might try a USB to Etherenet adapter.

Ended up plugging directly into the router and it’s now working. Strange!

As opposed to what, a switch?
