Nextcloud Apps Master Thread

We now have detailed guides for select NC apps!

Protip: check system requirements before installing a Nextcloud app - especially if running from a Pi or other low-powered hardware.

The below apps have been tested to work on StartOS across supported hardware platforms. Caveats and known issues are mentioned. Please leave any NC Apps feedback in this thread - it is extremely helpful to us and will lead to a better sovereign Nextcloud experience for everyone!

Appointments

For remote users to book appointments into your calendar - share via Tor; more practical following ‘clearnet’ support

Bookmarks

Sync bookmarks across devices (import via HTML format)
- Several sync clients available to choose from

Calendar

Uses CalDAV to sync with external integrations (see master thread link below)

Contacts

Uses CardDAV to sync with external integrations (see master thread link below)

Import (via URL) and store your favorite recipes for convenient access to ingredients, directions, and nutritional information. Build your own cookbook!

Custom Menu

Customize main Nextcloud menu with additional layouts, etc

Edit with LibreOffice

Adds a menu option to edit a Nextcloud file (on your server) from a local install of LibreOffice by logging into your server. Requires LAN or tor access.

Element Integration

Access Matrix within your Nextcloud with the Element web UI

Files

Included in base install - basic file syncing with Nextcloud client apps (see master thread link below)

Memories

A great photo/media app. Actions exist for both indexing your media (required for use with the app), as well as setting up geotagging (optional).

  • (Optional) If you would like to use the map for your geo-tagged photos, go to Nextcloud service page → Actions → Setup Map for Memories (and execute it)

Money

Basic financial logging and tracking

Music

Catalog, play, and stream your music from Nextcloud Files. Check out this user’s method for use with iOS.

NCDownloader (Torrent client)

News (RSS Feed Reader)

Notes

Supports Markdown

  • Syncing apps

Passwords

Store passwords and sync across devices with several options of client apps

Polls

Create and share basic polls - share via Tor; more practical following ‘clearnet’ support

Recognize

Control panel is found in Administration Settings → Recognize

  1. Install and enable Recognize app
  2. Go to Administration Settings → Recognize, you will see a message that " The machine learning models still need to be downloaded. "
  3. Go to your StartOS Nextcloud service page → Actions, and run “Download Machine Learning Models for Recognize” - wait for it to finish and then refresh the Recognize control panel
  4. You can now enable your desired recognition operations. Please be patient as these will take a long time to process (especially if you have a lot of media, or are using a Raspberry Pi or other lower power device).

Tasks

Known Limitations

Please feel free to comment with your experiences, tips, and reviews on Nextcloud Apps on StartOS. There is another master thread for general discussion of Nextcloud, clients, and integrations.

By Office suites under Known Limitations, do you mean that there are no good Office suites in the NextCloud app store that work on EmbassyOS?

In early testing, none were shown to work properly. If this is not your experience, please let us know - the feedback is very valuable. Several Nextcloud apps require additional server setup on the backend, which will slowly be added across updates, but what goes into those updates will be in large part based on the demand for any particular Nextcloud app.

OK that answers my question, thanks. Using CryptPad for now.

ONLYOFFICE working!

Colabora Online was able to install. However, it is unable to detect the inbuilt server.

What did you use for the Docs server?

FullTextSearch currently breaks the Nextcloud UI, but this is an app that would add tremendous functionality to Start9’s Nextcloud package because it would enable users to search for specific text contained within stored documents. Furthermore, when combined with Elastic Search (which doesn’t seem to break anything so far), searching for data that falls within a range of parameters becomes possible. Proper indexing and deep content searching are critical functions to any good cloud solution and fixing FullTextSearch to work with Start9’s Nextcloud build would be awesome.

A feature request has been opened here. It would be really helpful to have specific error messages, logs, symptoms, etc. If a known fix exists, or any info you have found while searching for solutions would be even more helpful.

I’m new to NC and not very techy, just uploaded a few photos for the first time - it seems to jumble them in random order rather than same order as the folder they came from. Not sure if there is a way to keep them sorted by date? Also seems to load very slowly, searched on NC forum, saw this seems to be a known issue. Would Memories be a better choice rather than Photos app?

Managed to install Talk - initially said ‘error this app cannot be enabled because it makes the server unstable’ , but now got it up and running. Haven’t tried video calls yet.

With photos loading so slowly even while on home network I’m not sure it will be useful to me as was hoping to remote log in via Tor. Is anyone using Talk or a photo app remotely?

Interested to hear from other start9 users about useful ways to use NC.

Thanks

just found this regarding remote log in

It is advised to setup your Nextcloud devices on LAN (if available) for the best experience. Once set up, Tor can be used for remote syncing, but remember that large files will likely fail or take a very long time, so it is best to use remote sync only for low-bandwidth activity, such as Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes. Streaming your music is also possible. Later in 2023, new connection options will unlock Nextcloud’s full feature-set.

Has this launched yet?

The new networking capabilities will be released with StartOS version 0.3.6. It has not been released yet and is in early Alpha testing. No official ETA yet.
